3 men, 3 guitars
Pavlo, left; Rik Emmett, centre; and Oscar Lopez perform together at the Kelowna Community Theatre on Thursday.
Burning up the phone lines took on an entirely new meaning when Oscar Lopez and Pavlo (one-name-suffices) began to talk about their cross-Canada tour.
With fiery Latino and Greek blood coursing through their veins, they create magical imagery when describing how they conjured up a tour with friend and talented Canadian guitarist Rik Emmett.
“We are truly brothers in our musical souls,” effused Lopez, a two-time Juno recipient who is never shy about mingling jazz, blues, and even pop into his Latin guitar groove.
“We have great chemistry on stage, we are good friends and with that we fire up the audience with the fire we feel in our souls and release through our music,” he said.
“Every night has been exuberant, an amazing experience where we take no prisoners!” he joked.
“On stage, we are not showing an act, we are not wearing a mask. The passion of the music is who we are and it spills out and touches everyone.”
The three-man tour has been on the back burner for some time, waiting patiently for an opportunity for the trio to travel unfettered by their solo career demands.
“We had the right mix of people, but we had to find a chance to clear the decks and get together to do this 29-city tour,” Pavlo added.
“Individually, we have busy schedules, travelling or recording, so this is very special.”
“It‘s very refreshing to do a tour like this,” added the Greek guitarist, who once performed for Prince Charles. “It‘s just the three of us, walking on stage with our guitars strapped to our backs, and the show begins.”
And PRO promises quite a show, over-flowing with Mediterranean magic, world fusion and Latin fire, they meld easily, jumping from rhumba to swing, bossa nova to rock, lullaby to fiesta.
“Spontaneity happens every night,” Pavlo said. “We have a set to follow, but still every night is different. One show, Oscar got up and started dancing, so Rik and I just kept playing, improvising. A jam session. The three-minute set turned into seven minutes of guitar and dance,” he recalled with a laugh.
On the surface, PRO seems a quirky mix of talents, with Chilean-born Lopez, Greek-heritage Pavlo and Canadian rock ‘n‘ roll Juno winner and Hall of Fame award recipient Emmett.
“We have a natural affinity for each other,” Emmett explained. “It‘s a combination of guitar styles that‘s viable, pleasing and appreciated from an artistic point of view.
“For years, I was used to being the front man in a rock band. Here, I can express myself on a totally different level,” he said.
“Instead of playing in an arena where (the audience) might be half-in-the-bag, people in a theatre are sitting, really listening to the music.”
“It makes you dig a little deeper into your artistic soul,” Emmett added.
As a combination, Pavlo, Rik and Emmett truly are a triple threat, sharing careers that include numerous albums, awards and nominations for honours in their respective genres.
As Pavlo points out, the three artists “have the same six-string guitar” in their hands, but he continues to be “astonished at how different it sounds, how different it can be,” depending on who is strumming the strings.
His music follows a Mediterranean style, “very linear, almost Bouzouki.”
Lopez injects a sizzling Latin feel and Emmett has the overtones of smooth jazz and rock, all of which blended seamlessly in their recently released CD, Trifecta.
But together, PRO agree, it‘s all about music, all about guitars.
